LOBSTERFIGHT - Interview

Jokes aside; the name "Lobsterfight" unfortunately has no actual meaning or interesting place of origin I'd have to admit. I came up with it randomly during my criminology class...

Tell us a bit about Lobsterfight.

LOBSTERFIGHT

ANGUEL: We're a two piece Indie Rock duo from Pueblo, Colorado that is keyboard/drum driven. We tend to experiment with our sound taking influences from a variety different genres.

Talk to us a bit about your 2022 release titled, 'Sun Soaking.'

LOBSTERFIGHT

ANGUEL: Sun Soaking is a beast of a record filled to the brim with pianos, nature themes, 60s inspired instrumentation, screamed vocals, and a noticeable lack of guitar for an """emo""" project. Thematically it details a love story between two characters named "Lambert" who's a goat and a grasshopper.

JAMES: it was the project that followed up our debut record, it had a lot of different influences from the first one and it was definitely an evolution of our sound and the process in which we make music.

Your track/album art style tends to be more hand-drawn characters.

Can you elaborate on a couple of drawings and their significance?

LOBSTERFIGHT

ANGUEL: I have been drawing ever since I could write, so I tend to use that skill in our music to bring out a visually distinctive style—as for specific drawings and their significance, the cover for "Sun Soaking" features an illustration of the main character for the record "Lambert", as the album focuses on him and his emotions almost entirely.

The cover for our 2020 record "pink, black, and orange in the corners." features a collage of paint, photoshop, and cartoons to form a cover that represents the chaotic nature of the music itself. The artwork features two characters named "Alex" and "Biggerstaff"—while the characters don't necessarily serve a thematic intention like "Lambert" does they give a visual identity to our music that our fans can latch onto.

JAMES: They all come out of Anguel’s head, he's been drawing characters and doodling for a long time now, since before I even met him.

Tell us a bit about the track 'The Scientific Classification of Stingrays.'

LOBSTERFIGHT

ANGUEL: "The Scientific Classification of Stingrays" is a song originally written by the absolutely amazing Home Is Where who reached out to us asking if we could cover a song for a compilation they were putting out. It took way longer for it to be finished as the production of our second record took a lot of time out of our hands, but eventually we sat down and banged out the tune in a few days. The track features what might honestly be just our signature sound. pianos, loud drums, screamed vocals, and a whole lot of extra fun instruments. It's our first track recorded with Acoustic piano, and our first to be mixed and mastered professionally.

COSMOS.PRESS

Can you elaborate on your stage name?

LOBSTERFIGHT

JAMES: My stage name is Yum-Man, and I'm pretty sure Anguel's is Fun-Man or Funny-man or something like that...

ANGUEL: Jokes aside; the name "Lobsterfight" unfortunately has no actual meaning or interesting place of origin I'd have to admit. I came up with it randomly during my criminology class in highschool and at the time it was originally intended to be a title for a solo album I was working on. The name means whatever you want it to mean.

What do you hope listeners take away from your music?

LOBSTERFIGHT

ANGUEL: I hope that listeners experience our music as something familiar yet new, music that holds a special place in their hearts that they can't find anywhere else. That's always been the intention.

JAMES: That they wanna listen to it again, and again, and again, and again, till they just can't go on without hearing Lobsterfight everyday and listening to everything new we put out... also I hope they get some good vibes from the music as well.

COSMOS.PRESS

What's next for Lobsterfight?

LOBSTERFIGHT

ANGUEL: The plan right now is to play a lot more shows and get that whole thing down. We also have plans for a new major release that we hope to share very soon.
